Summary

Watamula is a boat-access reef on the rugged west coast of Curaçao, celebrated for dense hard- and soft-coral gardens, dramatic underwater topography and powerful converging currents. Its dramatic coral fields, along with abundant cuttlefish and pelagic life, are cited as the main attractions. Dives start on a shallow shelf at about 5–6 m and slope steeply to roughly 20 m, with some routes extending to near 30–36 m. Entry is by boat and dives are typically conducted as drift dives because currents are strong and variable; visibility is generally very good (often around 20–30 m) and water temperatures are in the mid-20s °C year-round. Surface conditions can be choppy and guides use surface marker buoys for pickup. Significant hazards noted are strong, changing currents, boat traffic and deep water; divers should be proficient with buoyancy and drift procedures and dive with a guide, with advanced or drift-capable certification recommended.
