Summary
Two Mile Reef is a large coral reef complex off Sodwana Bay in the iSimangaliso Marine Reserve, stretching roughly 1.7 to 1.8 km in length and up to 0.9 km across. Its highly varied topography—pinnacles, coral outcrops, swim-through arches, caves, overhangs, ledges, coral gardens and sandy channels—offers a range of dive experiences from relaxed reef swims to deeper-edge exploration. The reef supports high biodiversity, with small critters (nudibranchs, pipefish, shrimps, seahorses) alongside larger animals such as turtles, rays and reef sharks.
Depths on commonly dived sites range from about 9 m in shallow sections to over 30 m on deeper edges (some sites drop to around 32 m). Visibility is typically 15 to 30 m and water temperatures range from about 22 to 27 °C, warmer in summer. Currents are usually mild to moderate and can shift with the tide, making drift dives common. Access is by boat from the Jesser Point launch (approximately a 5 to 10 minute ride); the reef is not accessible from shore. Shallow areas suit Open Water training while deeper sections and some drift profiles require Advanced certification. The site lies within a protected marine reserve, so anchoring and touching coral are prohibited.
