Tortugas

Playa del Carmen

Dive Site Photos

Summary

Tortugas is an extensive, gently sloping coral reef platform roughly 1×1 km in area, covered in coral and large sponges including prominent barrel sponges. It is named for the many sea turtles commonly seen there and is widely regarded as one of the most popular dives in the Playa del Carmen area; the reef supports abundant large fauna and schools of reef fish. Access is by boat, typically a 15–30 minute ride from Playa del Carmen, with entry on the southern reef edge and a northward drift along the reef with the prevailing current. Typical dive depths are about 18–25 m, with the slope descending to around 30 m in places. Visibility is generally excellent and the water is warm year-round. Currents range from moderate to strong, especially in deeper sections, so the site is usually treated as a drift open-water dive; Open Water is the minimum certification and the site is often recommended for advanced divers. No overhead or wreck hazards are present, and dives are commonly planned to maintain bottom time in the 18–25 m range with a controlled ascent to the shallower reef before surfacing.
