Summary
Thunderball Reef is a shallow limestone grotto famous as the filming location for the James Bond movie Thunderball. A small submerged opening leads into a large sunlit cavern beneath a coral-covered roof, where shafts of sunlight illuminate sponges, hard corals, and tropical reef fish. The surrounding reef is relatively flat with scattered ledges and small swim-through passages rather than deep drop-offs.
The cavern is shallow, with a maximum depth of about 20–33 feet and most of the visit spent in very shallow water, making it suitable for open-water divers and snorkelers. Access is by boat only; dive boats tie off near the cave entrance and divers swim in. Visibility is typically excellent, often exceeding 100 feet on calm days, and water temperatures run roughly in the mid-70s to mid-80s °F. Inside the grotto the water is usually still, but strong surge can occur with tidal changes and the low entrance can make exit difficult at high tide, so visits are timed for outgoing or slack tides.
