Telephone Pole

San Salvador

Dive Site Photos

Summary

Telephone Pole is a boat-access reef and wall dive featuring a dramatic underwater canyon, named for an old telephone pole once wedged across a deep cut in the reef wall. Divers launch from a sandy mooring at roughly 35–40 feet and can swim through a wide crevice that descends to about 100 feet; a large purple sea fan marks the northern end. The site is widely regarded as one of the most popular and frequently dived locations in the San Salvador area. Typical routes begin at the anchor, swim through the cut, exit onto the wall and follow it north past overhangs and coral pinnacles before returning south along the reef edge past the mooring. Visibility is generally very good, often exceeding 100 feet. Currents are usually light and water temperatures are warm, typically in the mid-70s to mid-80s °F. The site’s depth (to about 100 feet) and open-ocean setting make it best suited for experienced divers.
