Tapu

Bora Bora

Summary

Tapu is an open-ocean reef and wall dive located outside the main barrier reef of Bora Bora, featuring coral-covered slopes, steep drop-offs, and dense coral growth in sectors sometimes called Tapu Nui and Tapu Canyon. It is best known for frequent encounters with sharks, especially lemon sharks, which are a major attraction, alongside a rich reef environment. Dives typically begin in shallower coral areas around 9-10 meters and follow a descending reef into depths of 30-37 meters. Entry and exit are by boat only, with a boat descent into oceanic conditions. Visibility is usually excellent, often exceeding 30 meters, and water temperature is around 27°C. Strong currents can be encountered near the pass and along the drop-off, so dives are generally guided drift dives and are recommended for advanced/experienced divers with good buoyancy control; there are no overhead environments and standard safety stops should be observed.
