Sheraton Caverns

Sheraton Caverns is a signature south-shore site characterized by extensive collapsed lava tubes, arches and open caverns cut into black volcanic rock, with shafts of sunlight creating dramatic light-and-shadow effects. Hard lava surfaces are colonized by corals, sponges and reef growth, and the combination of striking geology and abundant marine life, especially very common green sea turtles, creates an underwater lava-jungle style swimthrough experience. The site is accessed by boat a few hundred yards offshore from Poipu; boat entries and exits are required and shore entry is generally not practical. Depths range from about 20 to 70 feet, with most interesting formations around 30-60 feet. Conditions are usually calm with minimal currents, visibility often excellent (60-100+ feet), and bottom temperatures typically in the mid-70s to low-80s °F. Cavern passages are large and daylight-penetrated with multiple exit points, but divers should maintain neutral buoyancy, move cautiously through tunnels, follow guide instructions, and operators often schedule morning dives to maximize natural light.
