Sea Tiger Shipwreck

The Sea Tiger is a large artificial-reef wreck off Oahu's south shore near Waikiki. The intentionally sunk former cargo vessel (1999) lies upright on the bottom, about 150–190 feet long, with intact decks, cabins and extensive swim-through and penetration routes. Its variety of marine life is a noted attraction and contributes to the site's popularity. Access is by boat only using a permanent mooring buoy; divers descend a shot line or buoy line. The top deck sits around 90–100 ft and the sand bottom about 110–120 ft. Visibility is typically 75–100 ft and water temperatures run about 75–80°F. Currents can be strong, especially on drop and ascent, so gas planning, bottom-time limits and preparedness for decompression limits are important. Penetration through open cargo hatches, stairwells and bridge interiors is possible because heavy steel fittings were removed, but divers should carry an SMB/DSMB, maintain good buoyancy to protect coral growth and respect wreck-penetration limits and training requirements. The vessel was intentionally sunk in 1999 as an artificial reef and was prepared for diving by removal of heavy debris. Notable features include two main deck levels, large cargo holds, engine room and wheelhouse; the bow is typically tied to a permanent mooring buoy, facilitating boat access.
