Sand Canyon / Black Rock Canyon
Guanaja
Dive Site Photos
Summary
Sand Canyon, also called Black Rock Canyon, is a dramatic volcanic canyon on the fringing reef of Guanaja characterized by sheer rock walls and a maze of cracks, caves and tunnels that create an underwater labyrinth. Marine life is abundant and is a main attraction, with frequent sightings of glassy sweepers, groupers, barracudas, moray eels and nurse sharks.
Access is by boat onto the barrier reef wall; divers descend along the vertical walls and swim through narrow canyons and caverns, with dark passages that generally require a dive light. Water visibility is typically very good (often around 20–30 m), currents are usually mild, and water temperatures are warm, generally in the mid-20 °C range year-round.
