Sail Rock

Koh Phangan

Dive Site Photos

Summary

Sail Rock is a solitary limestone pinnacle with steep vertical walls, coral-covered slopes, several smaller outcrops and a distinctive vertical chimney swim-through about 18 m long that opens roughly between 6 and 12 m. The site supports a rich reef and pelagic community and is noted as one of the best locations in the Gulf of Thailand for whale shark sightings. Dives are boat-only in open water; the formation rises about 10–15 m above the surface and descends to roughly 40–45 m, with the deepest areas requiring advanced open-water skills. Water temperatures are around 27–30 °C and visibility is generally good, often tens of meters but can drop to a few metres on unsettled days. Currents at depth range from mild to strong and dives are commonly planned as drift dives; the site can be choppy in bad weather, so divers should follow normal open-water safety practices.
