Summary

Sabang Wreck is a shallow, popular wreck dive featuring three intentionally scuttled vessels that now form an artificial reef. The site is renowned for very rich marine life, particularly small critters and reef fish, making it a favorite for macro hunters and underwater photographers. Dives typically range from about 5 m in the shallow sand/seagrass above the wrecks down to roughly 20 m at the deepest parts; two wooden wrecks lie around 16-18 m and a steel-hulled yacht sits on its side around 20 m. Visibility is typically 10-15 m and water temperature is warm, in the high 20°C range. Currents are usually light and dives are often done on incoming or slack tide. Access is by a short boat ride from Sabang Beach and the usual profile is a circuit around all three wrecks; conditions are generally calm and suitable for beginners. Divers should be cautious of well-camouflaged stonefish and scorpionfish, and of sharp coral and barnacles, and should maintain good buoyancy in the busy bay. All three vessels were purposefully sunk and are heavily encrusted with hard and soft corals, sponges, and sea fans. The steel wreck has large openings and a sizable crack allowing swimthroughs and interior viewing, while the wooden wrecks are heavily broken but support rich reef growth. Many dives continue from the wrecks into adjacent shallow coral gardens and seagrass where turtles and other seagrass-associated life can often be encountered; standard wreck-diving safety procedures are recommended.
