Roca Partida

Revillagigedo Islands

Summary

Roca Partida is a small rocky pinnacle with two steep spires above the surface and sheer vertical walls plunging to great depths. The topside is covered in seabird guano and underwater features include bowl-shaped ledges or "balconies" where large oceanic wildlife congregates; the site is famous for abundant pelagics, notably numerous sharks, giant manta rays, and large schools of tuna and trevallies. Access is by boat or liveaboard only and dives are typically drift-style around the pinnacle. There are shallow ledges and balconies at around 10–15 m and walls commonly reaching about 30–40 m or more. Visibility is very high, often exceeding 30 m, and water temperatures are generally in the mid-twenties °C. Currents and surge are often strong and changeable, making the dive challenging and generally recommended for advanced divers; divers must be self-reliant because seas can be rough, rescue options are limited, and there is a risk of being pushed against the rock.
