Dive Site Photos

Summary

Punta Sur features dramatic underwater topography with a steep wall, extensive reef slopes, and notable swim-through caverns, including a sunlit Cathedral chamber and the narrow Devil's Throat tunnel. It is widely regarded as one of the most popular and frequently dived sites. Typical dives start on a sandy bottom at about 15-20 m, descend along the reef slope with the Devil's Throat encountered around 25-30 m, and the wall dropping to roughly 50 m. Currents are medium to strong and often make the site a drift dive; they can be unpredictable over the wall. Access is by boat in open water. Visibility is usually very good, often around 30 m or more, and water temperatures range roughly from 23°C in winter to 26-27°C in summer. The depth, strong currents, and overhead swim-throughs mean the site is recommended only for experienced advanced divers with excellent buoyancy control. Sections may be seasonally closed by park authorities to allow coral recovery.
