Palancar: Gardens

Cozumel

Dive Site Photos

Summary

Palancar Gardens is the northern section of the Palancar Reef system off Cozumel, featuring lush coral gardens that transition into a dramatic near-vertical wall. The site is defined by large coral pinnacles, spires and arches and a labyrinth of brain corals, sea fans and black coral with numerous swim-throughs and caverns. It is widely regarded as one of the most popular and frequently dived sites on Palancar Reef. Access is by boat and dives are commonly conducted as drifts, following the reef from a sandy drop-off out to the wall and back toward shallows. The drop-off reaches roughly 24–25 m with a vertical wall beginning around 9–12 m; pinnacles rise to about 7–9 m and shallower sections near 9–12 m are often explored before ending in a grassy sand area. Visibility is generally excellent (often 20–30 m), currents are usually mild to moderate, water temperatures typically range from the mid-20s to upper-20s °C, and conditions are considered easy to moderate and suitable for open-water divers; stingrays and conchs are often seen in the final grassy sand area.
