Molokini Crater

Molokini Crater is a crescent-shaped submerged volcanic crater off Maui featuring a clear sheltered lagoon and a ring of coral gardens and pinnacles on the inner slope with a steep outer wall. The site offers very clear water and varied terrain for open-water diving, with abundant marine life around the pinnacles. Access is by dive boat, typically anchoring on the leeward side; there is no shore entry. Depths range from about 30–50 ft on the reef tops to roughly 65–72 ft at the deepest wall areas, with sandy flats, mushroom-shaped pinnacles and a dramatic drop-off on the western wall. Visibility is usually excellent, often over 100 ft and sometimes above 200 ft; water temperatures typically run in the mid-70s to low-80s °F. Currents inside the crater are generally mild and surges are infrequent in the protected lagoon; the site can be crowded with boats and snorkelers, and fishing or collecting is prohibited.
