Millers Point

Summary
Millers Point is a shallow rocky reef dive on the False Bay coast near Simon's Town, featuring granite boulders and corestone outcrops draped in dense kelp that create complex reef structure, swim-throughs and a rugged pinnacle about 150-200 m southwest of the point. The site is nicknamed Shark Alley for frequent sightings of native sharks, most notably broadnose sevengill sharks and several species of catshark; the boulder caves and kelp beds also attract octopus, small reef fish and other invertebrates.
Entry is from shore via a concrete slipway and a small sandy cove at the head of a tidal pool. Average depths are 6-8 m around the point while the offshore boulder group rises from about 15 m to 10 m; a typical route follows the rocky reef and kelp and divers are advised not to venture far into open water. Water temperatures range from about 14-16 °C in winter to around 18-21 °C in summer, with visibility usually 5-10 m. Currents can be moderate outside the kelp and diving is best on calm days with winds from the sea. The area is inside a marine protected zone and a recreational dive permit is required. Boat traffic is common so a surface marker buoy is recommended, strong south-east winds should be avoided, and adequate experience and situational awareness are important; no technical equipment or overhead penetration is needed.
