Middle Reef

Safaga

Summary

Middle Reef is a very large circular offshore coral reef offering extensive coral gardens, numerous coral blocks and pinnacles, steep drop-offs and a scenic hard-coral plateau. The site features a central shallow plateau with sand channels, tunnels and a coral "labyrinth" that can be carefully explored; it is widely regarded as a popular, frequently dived Safaga-area reef. This boat-access-only site is exposed to open-sea conditions and is typically dived from a moored vessel (about 80–90 minutes from Safaga). The plateau begins around 5–12 m and slopes to drop-offs of roughly 20–30 m on the north and west sides; a single pinnacle stands at about 20 m on the south end. Currents often run along the reef and drift dives are common; divers usually enter at the moorings or on large ergs and drift along the wall or through plateau areas. Significant hazards include strong currents and the risk of drifting away if surfacing far from the boat, so divers should carry marker buoys (SMBs) or a compass to avoid getting lost above the plateau. No cavernized overhead environments or wrecks are reported, though care is advised in the reef’s passages and small cave-like areas.
