Kandooma Thila

South Male Atoll

Dive Site Photos

Summary

Kandooma Thila is an underwater pinnacle rising from a base of roughly 30–40 meters to a summit around 12–16 meters, with extensive hard and soft coral cover, large table and staghorn corals, overhangs, small caves and coral blocks. Marine life is a major attraction, with frequent large schools of trevally and barracuda, reef predators such as whitetip and grey reef sharks, turtles, Napoleon wrasse, rays and abundant reef fish. The site is accessed by boat and is typically dived as a drift in a channel, with moderate to strong currents that often carry divers eastward from the top. Typical profiles start at the 12–16 m summit and descend along one side of the pinnacle; the west side called "Jack Corner" is commonly used for descent on outgoing tides, and a cleaning station is found around 30 m where grey reef sharks are often observed. Visibility is generally excellent, often 20–30 m or more, and water temperatures range from about 27 °C to 30 °C. Due to depth range and currents, the dive is recommended for advanced divers with drift experience.
