Hp Reef

North Male Atoll

Dive Site Photos

Summary

HP Reef is a colorful coral reef centered on a large coral pinnacle with steep walls, extensive soft corals, sea fans and sponges, numerous crevices and overhangs, a prominent cavern and a narrow chimney swim-through rising from about 27 m to 15 m. The reef top lies near 10 m and slopes to roughly 30 m or deeper, creating multi-level terrain on both sides. Marine life is abundant, with pelagic species and reef sharks often visible in open water. Access is by boat and dives are commonly conducted as drift dives along the reef, with typical routes beginning on one face, crossing a sandy channel and surfacing near a detached outcrop. Visibility is generally good, often 15-30 m, and water temperatures are around 26-29 °C. Currents are moderate to strong year-round, so the site is best suited to intermediate to advanced divers; local regulations prohibit diving when currents are excessively strong. Strong currents can make entry difficult and increase the risk of drifting low on air, and there are no full overhead cave systems beyond confined swim-throughs, so careful buoyancy control and awareness of ocean conditions are essential.
