Hole In The Wall

Hole In The Wall is an offshore reef formation featuring a large vertical wall and a prominent pinnacle with stands of black coral and colonies of snowflake coral on the faces and top. The structure supports large schools of tropical reef fish and invertebrates like slipper lobsters, and the site is noted for frequent sightings of rays and white-tip reef sharks; a partially buried military missile at about 100 feet and smaller ordnance fragments also host marine life. The reef begins around 60 feet and slopes down to about 100 feet with near-vertical walls and swim-throughs. Conditions are typically blue, clear water with good visibility; water temperatures are generally around 75-80 °F in summer and a 3-5 mm wetsuit is usually sufficient. Entry is by boat only. Currents can be moderate to strong due to Pailolo Channel tides, so dives are typically drift profiles; the open-ocean current and occasional surge along the wall are significant hazards and the depth and currents make the site suitable only for experienced divers.
