Dive Site Photos
Summary
Gili Selang is a small offshore islet dive with black volcanic sand slopes, mixed hard and soft coral gardens, dramatic rock formations and coral bommies. The east and north faces form steep walls and channels that descend to about 30-40 m, while a protected coral plateau provides sheltered reef. Marine life is abundant, from macro creatures in the sheltered reef to large pelagics in the deeper drift areas; commonly seen species include bumphead parrotfish, Napoleon wrasse, trevallies and reef sharks.
Access is normally by boat, though a rare shore entry is possible with a long climb back. Conditions are variable and often challenging, with very strong and changeable currents including downcurrents and swirling flows, so the site is primarily a drift dive and divers must stay with their guide and plan for tides. Visibility is generally good (around 15-30 m) and water temperatures range from about 23 °C in deeper thermoclines to 29 °C near the surface. There are no overhead or penetration hazards, but the steep drop-offs and open-water environment make this site suitable only for experienced divers carrying full gear.
