Giannis D

Summary

Giannis D is a wreck dive on Abu Nuhas reef featuring the remains of a 100 m Greek cargo ship that ran aground in April 1983 and broke into three main sections. The hull lies largely on its port side on a sandy bottom; the intact bow and stern are encrusted with soft corals and sponges while the central section is heavily collapsed, giving a broken, grated appearance. The tilted wreck has a mast and king-post rising toward the surface, creating a prominent vertical feature. The site ranges from about 5 m at the top of the mast to roughly 28 m at the deepest parts of the hull, with the stern and accommodation areas around 20–27 m. Water temperatures typically run about 19 °C in cooler months to 28 °C in summer, and visibility is generally very good, often 20–40 m in clear conditions. The dive is accessed by boat, commonly by RIB from a liveaboard or day-boat, with divers descending directly onto the wreck; moderate currents can occur and many dives are planned as drift dives. Wreck penetration is possible but compartments are tilted and can be disorienting, so only divers with appropriate wreck/penetration training and good buoyancy control should enter; plan for nitrogen exposure if exploring to 27–30 m and use the shallow mast top for safety stops. The vessel was a Greek cargo ship that grounded in April 1983 and now lies broken into bow, midships and stern. Notable features include the anchor and windlass at the bow, the engine and bridge at the stern, a dramatic winch and port companionway on the sand, and tilted funnel shafts; the central section is heavily collapsed while the mast and king-post rise toward the surface, allowing ascents near the mast top about 4–5 m below the surface.
