French Reef

French Reef is a coral reef site noted for vibrant coral formations, ledges, spur-and-groove structure, and numerous swim-through tunnels, including shallow caves such as Hourglass Cave and Christmas Tree Cave. The site lies within a Sanctuary Preservation Area and is boat-access only using mooring buoys, offering varied scenery from coral gardens and ledges to an outer deep wall. The reef slopes gently from about 15 to 45 ft (main mooring near 50 ft) with a deeper drop-off known as French Deep to around 80 ft. Conditions are generally calm with minimal currents, visibility often 50 to 100 ft unless fine silt settles, and water temperatures roughly in the 70s to 80s °F. Divers enter by boat, follow the reef contours staying just above the coral to avoid stirring sediment, and often carry lights to explore dimmer passages; shallow sheltered areas suit open-water divers and snorkelers while the deeper edges appeal to more experienced divers.
