Felivaru Kandu

Lhaviyani Atoll

Dive Site Photos

Summary

Felivaru Kandu is a coral reef channel with broad sandy lanes and shallow coral corners around 5 m that drop steeply into a central channel to about 30 m. A coral-covered ship's anchor is a local point of interest and hard and soft corals cover the channel walls and slopes. Large pelagic life is often present and is a notable attraction, including spotted eagle rays, grey reef sharks and great barracuda. The site is accessed by boat and is commonly dived as a drift, with currents frequently sweeping through the channel and occasionally exceeding 2 knots; divers should be prepared for steady flow and significant effort if swimming against strong currents. Visibility is generally very good, commonly around 15 m and often up to 30 m in clear conditions, and water temperatures typically range from 26°C to 30°C, with the dry northeast monsoon (December–March) bringing calmer seas and best visibility. Depths range from about 5 m on the coral corners to 30 m in the central channel; the depth and strong tidal currents make the site suitable for advanced divers, and while there are no overhead hazards, careful buoyancy control and navigation are required.
