Summary
El Penon is a wreck dive featuring the nearly intact remains of a 27 m harbor tugboat intentionally scuttled in 2006. The structure lies mostly on its starboard side and is encrusted with sponges and gorgonians, offering extensive exploration and serving as a popular artificial reef attraction.
Entry is from the shore via concrete stairs and a tunnel at a parking area, with a short swim through an underwater tube or directly to the wreck. Depths range roughly 18–32 m (bow about 18 m, keel about 32 m); visibility is typically very good, often 20–30 m, and currents are mild or limited. Much of the wreck lies below 20 m so advanced certification is required. Openings were cut and sharp hazards removed to facilitate penetration, but divers should use a guideline and avoid disturbing the fragile structure.
The vessel is a 27 m harbor tugboat scuttled in 2006 and remains nearly intact, with accessible areas such as the bridge and engine room reachable through prepared openings; the wreck has been prepared for safe penetration and is widely regarded as one of the most frequently dived wreck sites in the area.
