Summary

Eel Garden is a shallow reef site named for a large colony of garden eels rising from a sandy slope near the shore entry. The slope is bordered by coral outcrops, a fringing reef wall and a nearby reef ridge, with a deeper flattened area of coral boulders and table corals where the substrate levels out. The site is a shore entry by walking across a reef shelf into a cut and descending through a 2-3 m lagoon onto a white sand slope. Typical dives range from about 2-3 m down to 25 m, with experienced divers sometimes continuing to 30-40 m; dives commonly finish with a gradual ascent and safety stop among shallow corals at 3-7 m. Visibility is often 20-30 m and water temperatures are roughly 22-26 °C. Currents can occur, especially near the exit, so diving is best in calm, high-tide conditions; the site is suitable for Open Water and higher-certified divers and visitors should approach the eels slowly and avoid stirring up sand.
