Devana Kandu

Vaavu Atoll

Dive Site Photos

Summary

Devana Kandu is a classic drift dive through a current-swept channel in Vaavu (Felidhu) Atoll, defined by a long submerged thila that splits the passage. Curving walls and steep coral faces studded with soft corals, sponges, caves and overhangs create a dramatic reef landscape, and the main attractions are frequent grey reef and other reef sharks plus large pelagics passing through the open channel. Divers enter from a boat outside the channel opening and drift through the passage, typically hanging on with reef hooks or deploying a surface marker buoy while watching passing life. The dive reaches around 40 meters with a sloping sandy bottom into the blue; water temperatures are typically in the high 20s °C and visibility is often very clear. The site is characterized by very strong tidal currents, so plan to drift with the tide, perform proper safety stops, and expect rapid transfers through the channel. The strong currents and depth make this suitable only for experienced or Advanced Open Water certified divers; surface-signaling devices and careful planning around tide tables are recommended.
