CJ's Drop-off
Utila
Dive Site Photos
Summary
CJ’s Drop Off is a steep wall dive at the western end of Turtle Harbor, Utila, featuring a vibrant coral reef that plunges from about 6–15 m into very deep blue water. The wall is covered in hard corals, barrel sponges and overhangs, with healthy elkhorn and staghorn stands near the mooring; large reef and pelagic life is a main attraction, including spotted eagle rays, schools of jacks and snapper, green moray eels, occasional barracuda and hawksbill sea turtles, making the site popular with underwater photographers and night divers.
Access is by boat to a mooring buoy or dive line set on a sand patch at about 8–10 m; divers typically descend the mooring line, follow the reef wall and adjacent channels (a narrow canyon at about 12 m can shelter nurse sharks) and circle back along the shallower reef top for the safety stop. Depths range from roughly 6–15 m on the reef top with the wall descending well beyond 40 m; visibility often 15–30 m and water temperature around 28–30 °C. Currents are typically mild in Turtle Harbor but can vary; because of the sheer vertical drop and depth divers are advised to secure gear and be mindful of bottom time, decompression limits and safety stops; the site is an open wall with no overhead cave restrictions.
