Summary

Casa Cenote is a large open cenote set in a mangrove lagoon with a wide sinkhole entrance and open sky. The site extends roughly 230 meters toward the ocean and connects to the Sistema Sac Actun cave system and to the Caribbean via an underground tunnel, creating a brackish halocline and clear emerald-green water with sunlight filtering through mangrove roots. Diving is shallow and calm, offering a distinctive mix of freshwater and marine life and striking halocline light effects. The dive is shallow (maximum about 9–10 m) and suitable for open‑water divers; visibility is generally excellent, often on the order of tens of meters. Water temperatures are tropical, around the mid-20°C range, though divers may notice cooler freshwater mixing with warmer seawater. Currents are usually mild with occasional slight tidal flows through the tunnel. Entry is from shore via a small beach or dock, and the typical route is roughly L-shaped under arches of mangrove roots and around limestone ledges; the bottom is mostly sand and limestone with light-washed cavern sections near the ends but no overhead ceilings. Sunscreens, oils and insect repellents are prohibited to protect the site.
