Cannons and Tunnels

Cannons and Tunnels is a popular shore-entry reef dive at Hanalei, Kauai, noted for its collapsed lava-tube topography that creates a labyrinth of shallow tunnels, arches, and cavern-like swimthroughs amid healthy coral gardens. The site is organized into a series of tunnel swimthroughs and the nearby Cannons area of overhangs and coral slopes, offering a topography-focused diving experience. Entry is from the beach through a sandy reef break, often by walking in or using ladders; depths range from very shallow reef shallows down to about 70 feet. Visibility is generally good in calm weather and water temperatures are typically around 75–80°F year-round, but the outer reef can experience strong surge and currents, especially in winter. Strong surf or seasonal flooding are significant hazards, and parking and shoreline access are regulated, so divers should watch for waves and currents and surface only in permitted areas.
