Summary

Amberjack Reef is a shallow coral patch reef accessed only by boat, consisting of a small multi-layered coral outcrop rising from a sandy bottom to about 40-50 ft. The reef supports healthy hard corals including brain corals and sea fans and is renowned for rich marine life. Main attractions include regular Caribbean reef sharks and nurse sharks, large groupers (black, yellowmouth and yellowfin), schools of horse-eye jacks, spotted eagle rays, garden eels, pirate blennies and numerous Caribbean spiny lobsters. The dive is an open-water boat entry with a descent over open water onto the reef and an ascent from the reef top to the surface, with a safety stop on or above the reef. Typical maximum depth is around 40-50 ft; visibility is usually excellent, often 100 ft or more; currents are typically mild to gentle; water temperatures are warm, about 80-85°F. There are no deep dropoffs or overhead environments at this site.
