Summary

Aktun Ha (Cenote Carwash) is a freshwater cenote with a clear open-air pool featuring floating lily pads and a fallen tree that leads via an entry platform into a large daylight-lit decorated cavern. The cavern contains spectacular speleothems (stalactites, stalagmites and columns), tannin-stained rock, tree roots and ancient pottery, making it a popular photo site and an easily accessible cenote dive with notable wildlife such as freshwater turtles and small Morelet's crocodiles. The dive is shallow, typically 12-15 m, with calm conditions and often very high visibility (guides report over 40 m), though summer algal blooms can reduce clarity near the surface. There are no significant currents and the water temperature is around 25 °C. Entry is from a shore platform about 1.5 m above the water with a giant-stride entry; exits use underwater ladders. The bottom has fine sediment so divers should avoid stirring it; the site is an overhead cavern environment so basic cave-awareness training or guidance is required and an upstream-return route is recommended. Typical single-tank dive time is about 40 minutes and basic safety stops are done back in the open cenote garden. Divers must respect local rules such as no feeding wildlife and avoid provocative interactions with crocodiles.
